It is a different ... It is a different take on the original story. The storyline is not as it was written in the game. He doesn't need it, he wasn't an important character anyway, just a bridge. A needed bridge but a bridge all the same. And if you listen to his voice in the first movie it is pretty close, just not as heavy. I'd get used to things like that, this film? maker has a pretty big hand in the upcoming movie.
